We call upon all concerned politicians, public organizations and the media to publically condemn the Russian authorities’ attempts to fully silence the International Memorial , the International Historical Educational Charitable and Human Rights Society “Memorial” and to express their full support for the organization.

General prosecutor Igor Krasnov has requested the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to liquidate International Memorial  due to “systematic” violation of the foreign agent labelling requirements. International Memorial, a non-commercial organization that studies political repressions in the USSR and in present-day Russia and promotes moral and legal rehabilitation of persons subjected to political repressions, was declared a “foreign agent” in 2016.

Memorial’s statement:

«On November 11, 2021, at about 16:30, we received a notice from the Supreme Court that the General Prosecutor’s Office had filed a lawsuit to liquidate «International Memorial» for systematic violations of the law on “foreign agents” (we are talking about non-marking of the organization’s materials). The court session will take place on November 25.

We have repeatedly stated that the law was originally conceived as a tool to crack down on independent organizations, and insisted that it should be abolished. However, as long as the law exists, we are forced to comply with its requirements.

We believe that there is no legal basis for the liquidation of the «International Memorial».

This is a political decision to destroy the Memorial Society, an organization dedicated to the history of political repression and the protection of human rights».

We cannot silently watch how the Russian authoritarian regime is killing civil society. Now it is important for every employee of the «Memorial» to feel our support. We appeal to all concerned parties to spread this information in order to raise public awareness about this egregious  violation of fundamental human rights and democratic principles, make public statements of support, and call on the Russian to stop systemic persecution of the Russian civil society.
